What is TOEFL?
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language, Chinese translation "TOEFL") is an English proficiency test organized by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) of the United States. Its full name is the Test of English Proficiency for Non-native English Speakers.
Almost all American universities have set their own minimum TOEFL score requirements, ranging from 61 to 100 points, and some business schools have higher requirements. According to ETS statistics, the average minimum TOEFL requirement for undergraduates in the United States is 74.2 points, and for graduate students it is 82.6 points.
TOEFL test format and question types
Listening Section
Multiple choice questions, academic speeches, dialogues/academic lectures
The duration is about 20 minutes. Each dialogue is 2 to 3 minutes, and each speech is 4 to 6 minutes.
Writing Section
Integrated Writing (Reading + Listening), Independent Writing
This part consists of two questions. The independent writing part takes 30 minutes and is a short article with 150 to 225 words.
Reading section
Multiple choice questions, fill-in-the-blank questions, summary fill-in-the-blank questions, sentence fill-in-the-blank questions
This part is about 60 minutes long and has two new question types: "Insert sentence questions" and "Multiple choice questions with drag selection".
Speaking Section
Read sentences, answer questions, comprehensive speaking, independent speaking
The new TOEFL test takes approximately 15 minutes.
TOEFL test types and formats
Sponsored by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) of the United States, there are three main types of exams:
Paper-based exam
Complete the test within the specified time and answer the questions with a pen
Computer Test
Complete the test on a computer within the specified time
Internet-based test (IBT) (mainstream format)
The exam is conducted on a computer and the results are uploaded to the candidate's file in real time.
TOEFL registration method
There are two main ways to register: online and offline. Candidates can choose the appropriate way to register according to their own situation.
Online Registration
Log in to the ETS website, create an ETS account and fill in your personal information. Once your account is created, you can select your desired test date and test location. After paying the test fee, you will receive a confirmation email. Please note that the ETS website only accepts credit card payments.
Phone Registration
You can find the phone numbers of ETS customer service centers around the world on the ETS official website. After calling, the customer service staff will ask for your personal information and the desired test date and location. You will need to provide credit card information to pay for the test.
China Education Ministry's Overseas Study Service Center
You need to register on the CSCSE official website and fill in your personal information. Then, you can choose the desired exam date and location, and pay the exam fee. CSCSE also accepts other payment methods such as bank transfer and Alipay.
Register by mail
You will need to download and complete the TOEFL registration form and mail it along with a check or money order to the ETS Customer Service Center. Please note that mailing may take longer to process.
